Macambol, where BHP Billiton is planning a huge nickel mine, lies between two environmentally protected areas
CAFOD is concerned about mining company BHP Billiton's plans to build a huge nickel mine, here in Macambol, Philippines [CAFOD/Simon Rawles]

Mining can all too often be a cause of conflict, environmental destruction and toxic pollution. This campaign highlights the hidden harms

When new mines are developed, communities can be forced from their lands and homes.

Rivers and streams close to mines can be polluted and hillsides and fields devastated, with damage lasting long after mines have closed.

CAFOD is calling on governments and mining companies to end this injustice, and give poor communities a greater say in whether mining is allowed, how it operates, and who benefits.

We also work with local organisations who are supporting poor communities to stand up for their rights.
