As Humanitarian Director, you will provide strategic leadership, working with senior staff in our member organisations to ensure Caritas has a coherent response to humanitarian emergencies that complies with the highest international standards.
You will also lead on CI humanitarian policy, helping to shape discourse at the global level across the humanitarian community.
The Caritas confederation includes some of the world’s biggest NGOs, but also some of the smallest. Our work is based in a community response and you will need the maturity and sensitivity to manage diverse needs and expectations.
You will be a seasoned international aid professional with at least 10 years senior management experience. You will be an inspirational leader, a strategic thinker, and a good communicator.

CAFOD, on behalf of Action by Churches Together (ACT) International and Caritas Internationalis, is seeking a Head of Finance for the NCA Darfur Programme. ACT and CI have been working together in Darfur to support the people caught up in the crisis through a partnership formed in July 2004, providing support to Norwegian Church Aid who manage the NCA Darfur Programme in Sudan. CAFOD, as the lead Caritas agency, takes specific responsibility and support for recruitment of international personnel and seconds staff to NCA.
The NCA Darfur Programme is a multi-sector operation undertaken by a consortium of four implementing members; the NCA operational component; the Sudan Council of Churches (SCC) component; the Sudanaid (Caritas Sudan) component; the Sudan Social Development Organisation (SUDO) component. The NCA Darfur programme is implemented in numerous locations across south and west Darfur. The sectors covered are Water & Sanitation, Health & Nutrition, School Support, Agriculture, Peace Building and Emergency Response. In 2008, we are assisting more than 250,000 people with a budget of US$13 million.
The Head of Finance maintains and develops financial management for the NCA Darfur programme.
They provide sound financial advice to the senior management team and the Local Partners. The post holder also ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements as relating to NCA routines and guidelines, donor requirements and national law and regulations. We are looking for someone with a degree in accounting or similar discipline together with proven ability to manage the finance function in an NGO or international organisation, ideally overseas, incorporating accounting, budgeting, etc.
The successful candidate will have an ability to communicate with actors at all financial competence levels in the programme and donor networks. Knowledge of Navision Attain (financial management system) is an essential component of the job as is a good understanding and experience of accounting in complex funding structures. The successful candidate will further have good interpersonal skills and a team oriented attitude. We are looking for someone with excellent knowledge of MS Excel and Word, experience of working with modern financial systems, a high degree of initiative, motivation and flexible attitude and an aptitude for financial tasks and attention to detail. Applicants will need to demonstrate good training, capacity building and management skills. It is essential that candidates also demonstrate an ability to work under pressure and in a stressful environment with an ability to work independently and with self-confidence. An ability to interpret and apply rules to complex transactions is also essential. Excellent knowledge of oral and written English is essential.
