Caritas Pakistan
Caritas Pakistan is responding to the needs of survivors after the earthquake focusing their efforts on longer-term health and livelihoods work
With the support of CAFOD, Caritas Pakistan took on the leading role for the emergency response on behalf of Caritas, the global network of Catholic aid agencies.
Caritas Pakistan spent a total of £2.4 million (including CAFOD funds) on emergency work during 2005-2006.
Caritas Pakistan provided earthquake-affected people with temporary shelter, basic items such as hygiene kits and kitchen sets, and health care assistance, immediately after the disaster.
Caritas Pakistan continue to help earthquake-affected people by providing temporary shelters and warm clothes, but they are also focusing their efforts on longer-term health and livelihoods work, including the running of mobile health clinics, the rebuilding of three basic health units, kitchen garden training and seed and fertiliser distributions.
By encouraging people to come together, and making them aware of their rights and responsibilities, people can identify their problems and find their own solutions
They are also forming community groups where men and women can come together to identify the problems they are facing and work to address them.
CAFOD Emergency Programme Manager for Pakistan, Jiwan Das explains
"By encouraging people to come together, and making them aware of their rights and responsibilities, people can identify their problems and find their own solutions."
